It’s the final month of summer, so it’s time to start thinking about going back to school! If you’re living in dorms for the first time, it’s best to prepare early before Bed, Bath & Beyond starts to sell out of your top college survival items.
I’m not sure how I would have survived college without my beloved trunk. Initially purchased as luggage, it became my burrowing place to store essentials for the winter. There are many moments through out the college experience, particularly Freshman year where you don’t have the time to have breakfast in the dining hall, or the funds to order delivery when the dining halls are already closed.
Here is a list of 8 essential items to keep in your trunk to keep you sane during exams and, even worse, east coast winters. Plus if you really don’t get along with your roommate, you can lock up the most valuable commodities when a snow storm is happening.
1. YOUR FAVORITE JUNK SNACKS
It’s your salvation not your indulgence. Freshman 15 is REAL. Have two, no more than three junk food items. The only exception is ramen. It’s damn near an essential, just watch the sodium levels.
2. CEREAL & OATMEAL
No not a sugar kind. It’s time to find a grown ups cereal that you like. Maybe you pulled an all nighter, or haven’t finished your assignment for your 1st class. The dining hall is a no-fly zone because there may be long lines, no tables. It’s much less stressful to just have something on hand. Oatmeal is an awesome option as well just in case you’re out of milk.
3. DINING WARE
Have at least 2 of everything. You may come into college knowing no one, but you may hit it off with your roomie, get a best friend down the hall… who knows. Be able to share with thy neighbor.
4. MICROWAVE SAFE BOWL
I know I already mentioned dining ware, but between my years of prep-school & college, I’ve seen too many fatal death matches between plastic bowl & ramen.
5. NUTELLA & WHOLE WHEAT BREAD
It’s a delicious meal where no refrigeration is required. Winning!
6. MICROWAVE POPCORN
It’s one of those items that you should always have on hand. The moment you don’t, you’ll find yourself frustrated for not having it. It has a very long self life so there is no harm in always having it.
7. HOT SAUCE
It’s main purpose is to salvage shitty delivery. Fact: hot sauce makes everything taste better.
8. INSTANT RAMEN
Of course I couldn’t leave out the #1 college survival food. In some cases, post-graduate survival food. Take time to compare brand’s nutritional facts paying particular attention to sodium levels. The key is to be kind to your wallet, but high sodium is very unkind to your waistline (bloating.)
